Grit Engine

Six metrics from your climbing log.

The Grit Engine is the math layer behind Crux Logs. It reads the climbs you enter and turns them into plain, deterministic summaries of effort, fear, consistency, and project work.

Sessions

Date, place, discipline mix, and how often you are climbing.

Climbs

Grade, attempts, sends, falls, hangs, flash, and fear rating.

Projects

Repeated tries, notes, timeline, and whether the route eventually went.

How to read it

Context, not a score.

None of these metrics says whether a session was good or bad. They show the shape of the work: where you are trying hard, where fear is changing, and how much attention your projects are getting.

Limit climbing

Push Rate

01
climbs at your max / total non-warmup climbs
Measures
How often your logged climbs sit at your current ceiling for that discipline.
Why it exists
Some sessions are for mileage. Some are for trying hard. Push Rate shows the mix without turning it into a score.
Example readout
You sent 5.11d. That is a new max. Three months ago your hardest was 5.11b.

Fall practice

Fall Willingness

02
intentional falls / route-climbing sessions
Measures
How often lead or route sessions include recorded intentional falls.
Why it exists
Falling is part of learning to commit. The metric reflects whether that practice is present in the log.
Example readout
3 intentional falls today. Last month you averaged 0 per session. Something shifted.

Bravery

Fear

03
average fear rating on hard climbs
Measures
Fear ratings from 1 to 5 on climbs near your current max.
Why it exists
Lower fear on similar grades can be progress even when the grade does not move.
Example readout
You sent 5.11a today with fear rated 2. Six weeks ago on 5.11a, you rated it 4.5.

Easy versus hard

Comfort Zone

04
climbs well below max / total non-warmup climbs
Measures
How much of your climbing is below your current ceiling.
Why it exists
Easy volume can be intentional. This makes the ratio visible so you can read it in context.
Example readout
All easy terrain this session. Sometimes that is exactly what you need.

Investment

Project Persistence

05
average attempts before send or abandon
Measures
How much time you keep returning to the same climb.
Why it exists
A project is not just a failed send. It is a record of attention, beta, and repeated tries.
Example readout
44 attempts on Rainbow Roof across 7 sessions. That is investment.

Showing up

Session Consistency

06
recent sessions / your normal session rhythm
Measures
Your current climbing rhythm compared with your own history.
Why it exists
Consistency is not a guilt metric. It is context for every other trend.
Example readout
12 week streak. 2.5 sessions per week. You are building something real.

Try it

Log a few sessions. Let the pattern show itself.

Crux Logs only has something to say after you give it real data. Silence is better than hollow advice.
